The fish:

The fish is an amazing creature; they can go around there doing nothing, occasionally joining other fishes with a group and be awesome, and more often than not, just be alone.
Some fishes have bad luck, and they're fished by a fisherman that takes it's head off, cooks it and then eats it later. Or just a bear that takes the fish out of it's river and rips it off in pieces, to eat it.
Well the bear; the bear is hungry!
The fisherman, I don't know. It can get food from some other places. Who is more violent, I am going for the fisherman, lol.

Anyways, it's been said that the fish have short span memory. You can poke your fish around, and it will quickly forget your whereabouts. You can play with that fish and make it believe things that aren't there, and the fish will follow you. Hah, your goldfish is so funny! x3
I mean it's just a fish! When you play with your fish and make it follow your finger around the small aquarium you made, you don't really think if the fish is okay or not. From an outside, the fish is okay, Oh the fish is having fun!
How can you really know that your fish is okay, is happy? Your fish may as well just be the only one in your aquarium and the only contact it has with other creature is your finger that pokes it over the water. You may make the fish to believe there's something new that will come, but it's just your finger. Just that your fish forgets about it. You're just playing with the fish xD.
But if you think about it, that fish is alone in your own aquarium. Is it fair for it? That the only contact it has is with your finger that just trick it into believing something?

Why not get another fish? After all, the decision of getting another fish is not on your lovely fish pet, but on you. You are the one that decide if your fish gets to have some company, or stays alone, feeling the fake feeling of your finger when you play with it.
"Idk, I don't care if my fish is happy or not, because I'm not it and after all, my fish can't show or display it's unhappiness"
In any case, even if you think about your fish, even if you think about the fish as a person, as someone, you will not relate to your fish. Because you might as well enjoy playing with it, believing that the fish is happy with itself, when in reality, things are way different.
"After all, it's just for fun!" you can say. Whether or not the fish thinks that your actions are 'fun' is to be seen.
"Oh don't worry little fish! you may be alone but at least I think I see you happy and I enjoy you being cute".

The fish won't reply, because, well, it's a fish. A pet fish, your pet. An inferior creature that had the misfortune to not be in your position, and be at the mercy of your will.
Well but who cares, as long as the fish lives, everything is okay! You won't feel bad for it cuz it's a toy!

Then the fish dies. Maybe it was alone, had no hopes, no will, no future. Is not that a simple fish has that, but there's always the choice, and you can chose to give it more.
Heh, at least you now can replace your fish. Throw the body to the toilet, get a new one, enjoy and play with your new fish until the next one dies, forever.
Maybe someday you can think if you could have made the fish happy, not just when you play with it. But the hell, why I should think about a fish?

Who knows... who cares either way. You like playing with it, that's all it matters.
